MTD For Income Tax Self-Assessment

What Is Making Tax Digital (MTD) for
Income Tax Self-Assessment (ITSA)?

Navigating Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment (ITSA) can be complex. At Cashtrak, we simplify the transition for sole traders and landlords, ensuring seamless compliance and peace of mind..

It's an HMRC initiative designed to modernise and streamline the way individuals report their income and pay taxes.

Starting from April 2026, sole traders and landlords with an income over £50,000 will need to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC using MTD-compatible software.

This replaces the traditional annual tax return with a more frequent and transparent process, helping taxpayers stay on top of their obligations and reduce errors. At Cashtrak, we specialise in helping businesses and individuals transition smoothly to MTD, ensuring compliance while simplifying the process. Let us help you stay ahead of these changes with expert guidance and digital tools tailored to your needs.

Deadlines

From April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with an income above £50,000 will be required to follow the MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment regulations.

From April 2027, self-employed individuals and landlords with an income above £30,000 will be required to follow the MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment regulations.

Regulations

  • Digital Records: You must keep digital records of your income and expenses.

  • Quarterly Updates: Submit quarterly updates of your income and expenses to HMRC using compatible software.

  • Annual Tax Return: File your annual Self-Assessment tax return digitally.

  • Approved Software: Use software that meets HMRC's specifications for digital record-keeping and reporting.

"We highly recommend them to other small businesses and self employed people."

"I have been looking for someone to help with my accounts and tax for a while now.  Over the last couple of years, I have spoken to a number of professionals who have all left me feeling confused and overwhelmed. Then I spoke to Cashtrak.

They not only have a wealth of knowledge, but can explain things really clearly & concisely so that I know exactly what to do & where I stand.  They're patient & answer questions (even really obvious ones – and I feel that there have been many) quickly and expertly without ever being patronising."

FAQs

Q. I have multiple income sources (e.g., two sole trader businesses or a business and a rental property). Do I need to comply with MTD for ITSA?

A: Yes, if the total combined income from all your self-employment businesses and rental properties exceeds the MTD thresholds (£50,000 from April 2026, or £30,000 from April 2027), you will need to comply. It's the aggregate qualifying income that matters, not the income from individual sources.

Q. What is "qualifying income" for MTD for ITSA, and how is it calculated?

A: "Qualifying income" for MTD for ITSA refers to your total gross income (before expenses) from all your self-employment businesses and rental properties combined. It does NOT include income from other sources like employment (PAYE), pensions, or investments. If your total gross income from these qualifying sources exceeds the thresholds, you'll need to comply.

Q. Will the deadlines for paying my tax change under MTD for ITSA?

A: No, the payment deadlines for your Income Tax will remain the same as under the current Self-Assessment system (typically 31st January, with payments on account also due 31st January and 31st July if applicable). MTD for ITSA changes how you report your income and expenses throughout the year, not when you pay your tax.

Q4. Do I need to buy expensive software to comply with MTD for ITSA?

A: You'll need to use MTD-compatible software to keep digital records and submit your quarterly updates to HMRC. This doesn't necessarily mean expensive software; some free options exist, and many paid solutions offer various features and price points. At Cashtrak, we can help you choose the right software for your needs and budget, and even provide training.

Q. I'm not very tech-savvy. How will Cashtrak help me transition to MTD for ITSA?

A: We understand that going digital can feel daunting. Our team specialises in making this transition as smooth as possible. We offer personalised support, from helping you choose and set up the right MTD-compatible software to providing training and handling all your quarterly submissions and year-end declarations. Our goal is to take the stress out of MTD for you.

Q. Will my accounting fees increase due to MTD for ITSA?

A: MTD for ITSA does involve more frequent reporting, which often means more regular input and monitoring. However, our streamlined processes and fixed monthly fee structure are designed to make our services cost-effective and transparent, helping you spread the cost and avoid surprise bills while ensuring full compliance.

Q. I'm good with software and already do my own tax returns. Can I manage MTD for ITSA myself?

A: Yes, absolutely! If you're comfortable with digital tools and managing your tax, you can.

However, many self-employed individuals and landlords find that partnering us saves them significant time and stress. We ensure submissions are accurate and timely, help you choose the best software for you, and offer tax guidance. This allows you to focus on your business and your MTD obligations are taken care of.
